Game servers

FiveM: setup and troubleshooting

Check FXServer, txAdmin, resources and the database separately; distinguish client performance from server performance.

  1. Check FXServer and OS compatibility; keep the server license key private.
  2. Complete txAdmin setup and test the base server before adding a framework.
  3. Add ESX, QBCore or QBox resources in dependency order; back up configuration before changes.
  4. Record the affected scenario: use the server profiler and client resmon separately, and check database latency.

Troubleshooting: If connection fails, check the server process, license/startup errors and network access. A server-wide stall and one player’s low FPS require different investigations.

Minecraft: setup and troubleshooting

Edition, modpack, world and view distance affect Minecraft resource needs. Measure memory and CPU bottlenecks separately.

  1. Choose Java Edition or Bedrock and match the server version to your players.
  2. For Java servers, verify the required Java version in the server software documentation.
  3. Keep -Xmx below total VDS memory to leave room for the OS and other processes.
  4. Back up the world and configuration, then observe CPU, memory and tick times during a realistic session.

Troubleshooting: Memory usage alone does not prove insufficient RAM. Examine GC pauses, swapping, tick times and plugin load together before upgrading.

Unturned: setup and troubleshooting

Plan an Unturned Dedicated Server on a VDS, resolve Workshop dependencies and preserve world saves during updates.

  1. Install the base server using SDG’s Dedicated Server guide.
  2. Confirm connection on a default map before adding Workshop content.
  3. Record dependencies and introduce items in controlled steps.
  4. Back up saves and test restoration before updates.

Troubleshooting: If a map fails to load, inspect download/startup logs and Workshop dependencies. If a default map works, investigate the modded configuration.

Rust: setup and troubleshooting

Evaluate free RAM, world size, entity load and post-wipe checks when selecting a Rust VDS.

  1. Allow OS headroom when estimating free RAM.
  2. Install with SteamCMD and Facepunch’s guide.
  3. Measure map and plugin load using a real save.
  4. Back up before wipes and test connections after updates.

Troubleshooting: If a fresh map is fast but an older world slows down, compare entity and plugin load rather than inferring capacity from player count or RAM alone.

MTA: setup and troubleshooting

A practical sequence for MTA configuration, resource dependencies, ACL permissions and database errors.

  1. Complete the base setup using the MTA Server Manual.
  2. Test player connectivity with your mtaserver.conf settings.
  3. Verify resource dependencies and necessary ACL permissions.
  4. Inspect database errors in logs and back up configuration.

Troubleshooting: When a resource fails, start with the first log error and distinguish missing dependencies from ACL denial. Connection failures and slow database queries are different problems.

GMod: setup and troubleshooting

Check gamemode, Workshop collections, map dependencies and addon issues separately on a Garry’s Mod server.

  1. Choose a gamemode and confirm base dedicated-server connectivity.
  2. Record the Workshop collection and map dependencies.
  3. Add addons in small groups and inspect Lua logs.
  4. Back up configuration and gamemode data before updates.

Troubleshooting: Investigate missing models/textures separately from crashes. Check client dependencies for the former and logs/recent changes for the latter.

ARK: setup and troubleshooting

Plan ARK: Survival Evolved edition, maps, mod order and save backups together; assess ASA separately.

  1. Verify players’ ASE edition and platform.
  2. Test a base map and record the mod list.
  3. Back up the world and configuration with the server stopped.
  4. Verify startup in a test copy after mod/game updates.

Troubleshooting: For post-update connection errors, check client/server versions and mod compatibility. Do not apply ASE RAM guidance to ASA.

V Rising: setup and troubleshooting

Separate connection settings from game rules and plan PvE/PvP choices and world backups for a V Rising VDS.

  1. Choose installation instructions for your game version.
  2. Configure host and game settings in their separate JSON files.
  3. Verify PvE/PvP and world rules with a test connection.
  4. Back up saves separately and test restoration.

Troubleshooting: If startup fails, inspect JSON syntax and startup logs. If the process runs but connections fail, check version compatibility and network access separately.
