GMod Server Setup: DarkRP, TTT and Workshop

Check gamemode, Workshop collections, map dependencies and addon issues separately on a Garry’s Mod server.

Choosing Sandbox, DarkRP or TTT

Choose the gamemode first: Sandbox, DarkRP and TTT need different addons. Follow Facepunch’s Dedicated Server guide and test a basic map before installing the chosen gamemode and addons. This separates base-server failures from mod problems.

Workshop collections and missing content

Document map and addon dependencies alongside the collection. Server-side availability does not prove clients downloaded the necessary models and textures. For ERROR models or missing textures, check client downloads and map dependencies, including content licensing requirements.

Separating Lua errors from resource limits

Identify the addon associated with a Lua error. Disable the latest addition in a test copy and repeat the same scenario; avoid changing many things at once. Record CPU and RAM with the addon list. Investigate specific DarkRP jobs or entities before blaming overall player count.

Management scope in a GMod VDS

An operating system control panel is different from in-game administration. Establish who maintains files, Workshop lists, permissions and backups. Compare storage, addon workload and management responsibilities alongside price. Keep separate configuration and gamemode backups before updates.

Setup checklist

1. Choose a gamemode and confirm base dedicated-server connectivity.
2. Record the Workshop collection and map dependencies.
3. Add addons in small groups and inspect Lua logs.
4. Back up configuration and gamemode data before updates.

When something goes wrong

Investigate missing models/textures separately from crashes. Check client dependencies for the former and logs/recent changes for the latter.
